The Rachel Upjohn Building is the home of the U-M Depression Center and of
nearly all outpatient psychiatry services for children and adults at the U-M
Health System, as well as the U-M Addiction Treatment Services' outpatient
programs for teens and adults. It also serves as a hub for research in mental
illness and addiction, including clinical trials that rely on volunteers from
the community to make new discoveries.
The building, with 112,000 square feet and more than 330 offices for patient
visits and other activities, is a warm and welcoming environment, with skylights
and windows designed to bring sunlight in and lift the spirits of those who
receive care there.
The clinics are concentrated on the first floor, with Child & Adolescent
Psychiatry on one side of the light-filled atrium, Adult Psychiatry opposite,
and U-M Addiction Treatment Services on the east end of the building. The second
floor is devoted to research, and the lower (garden) level has a conference
center with rooms for group and family sessions as well as classes and
lectures.
Volunteers in clinical trials may come to the second floor of the building
for appointments, for an overnight sleep study in the Sleep &
Chronophysiology Lab, or to "practice" having an MRI brain scan in the MRI
simulator before going to the University Hospital or other facilities for actual
scans.
Other psychiatry services, including inpatient hospital care, ECT treatment
and psychiatric emergency care, remain in place at University Hospital and C.S.
Mott Children's Hospital. The Neuropsychology clinic is housed at the
Commonwealth building on Plymouth Road.
Next door to the Upjohn Building, U-M's Geriatric Psychiatry specialists see
older patients at the U-M Geriatrics Center. U-M Psychiatry clinicians also care
for patients at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the Washtenaw Community
Health Organization.
